Earlier this month, the central government approved two vaccines against COVID-19 for emergency use. One of them was Covishield, the Indian variant of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 manufactured by the Serum Institute of India.

Government of India has also signed a contract with Serum Institute of India for the supply of 11 million doses of Covishield. Serum Institute has already created a stock of over 50 million dosages of the Covishield and intends to produce up to 100 million dosages per month by March next year.

According to media reports, the company is expected to sign a deal with Gavi-COVAX to supply over 400 million additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines. Gavi is a public-private global health partnership to increase access to immunisation in poor countries.

Through its Strategic Investment Fund, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide at-risk funding of a further US$150 million to Gavi, bringing the total funding provided through this collaboration to US$300 million. This funding will be utilized to support the Serum Institute of India to manufacture potential vaccine candidates, and for future procurement of vaccines for low- and middle-income countries via Gavi’s COVAX AMC.
